Engagement photo locations in Greenville, SC.

Eight places we actually shoot at, with notes on light, parking, and the right time of day for each one.

When couples ask us where to do their engagement session, we usually push back gently and ask one question first. What feels like you?

A downtown couple who lives off Main probably doesn't want a barn shoot 40 minutes away. A couple who hikes every weekend probably doesn't want a Falls Park shoot. The right location is the one that feels like a Tuesday with you two in it.

With that out of the way, here's the working list. The places we keep coming back to.

01

Falls Park on the Reedy

Downtown Greenville

Light. Soft directional light morning and late afternoon. Liberty Bridge is best in the last 90 minutes before sunset.

Notes. The most-requested location in the city. Get there early or shoot off-peak (weekday morning) to avoid crowds. Free, public.

02

Furman University

Travelers Rest side of Greenville, about 15 minutes from downtown

Light. Open campus, big variety. Bell Tower in the morning, Rose Garden afternoon, Japanese Garden in soft midday.

Notes. Open to the public for photography. Just stay out of the way of students and weddings. Massive backdrop variety in one parking lot.

03

Paris Mountain State Park

About 10 minutes north of downtown

Light. Tree filtered. Best in late afternoon when the sun gets low enough to come through the trunks.

Notes. Five dollar park entry. Lake, piers, footbridges, wooded trails. The closest mountain-feel spot to the city.

04

Cleveland Park and Rock Quarry Garden

Just outside downtown Greenville

Light. Quarry Garden is shaded most of the day, which means flattering even light. Cleveland Park opens up for golden hour.

Notes. Quarry Garden has a small waterfall and stone footbridge. Cleveland Park has open green space. Free, walkable from downtown.

05

Conestee Nature Preserve

About 15 minutes south of downtown, near Mauldin

Light. Open fields plus shaded boardwalks. The grassy field at the back of the property is one of the prettiest golden-hour spots in Greenville County.

Notes. Free. Lots of parking. Good for couples who want a softer, less-shot backdrop than Falls Park.

06

Downtown Main Street

Heart of downtown Greenville

Light. Open shade between the buildings in the middle of the day. Golden side-light at sunset.

Notes. Brick alleys, the West End, the bridges off Main. Best on a weekday morning when foot traffic is lower.

07

Bald Rock and Caesars Head

About 45 minutes from Greenville, in the Blue Ridge foothills

Light. Massive open sky. Backlit at sunset.

Notes. For couples who want the mountain-overlook frame. Bald Rock is graffiti covered (in a cool way), Caesars Head has a cleaner overlook.

08

Unity Park

West side of downtown Greenville

Light. Modern open park. Best in the last 90 minutes of light when the metalwork on the bridge catches the sun.

Notes. Newer park. Less crowded than Falls Park. Walkable from downtown but feels separate.

A few practical things

Permits. Most of these are free for engagement sessions. Falls Park, Cleveland Park, and Unity Park don't require permits for non-commercial photography. Furman is open to the public for personal shoots. Paris Mountain has a small entry fee. State parks (Caesars Head, Table Rock) require their standard park admission.

Time of day. The light in Greenville is at its best the last 90 minutes before sunset. We try to start sessions about two hours before sunset and finish 15 minutes after. That gives us harder light at the start (for the editorial frames) and the soft glow of dusk for the closer shots.

Season. April through early May for spring blooms. Late October through mid-November for fall color. Anything in summer wants to start late, like 6 to 7pm, to keep portraits in flattering light. Winter weddings often book downtown sessions because Main Street still works when the trees are bare.

Outfit changes. If you want two looks, pick locations close to each other and we'll change in the car. Falls Park into Main Street is the easiest combo. Furman covers four looks in one parking lot if you want variety in one stop.

Our take

You'll look at these photos for the rest of your life. Pick the place that looks like the two of you, not the place that's most photogenic.

We can make light work anywhere. We can't make a location feel like you.
