Posing for families (with actual kids).

Forget poses. Use activities. The candy bribery exception is real, but only if you save it for the right moment.

We've shot family sessions where a four-year-old hit the ground crying in the first five minutes. We've also shot sessions where the four-year-old wandered off into a field and came back fifteen minutes later with the best photos of the day.

The difference isn't the kid. The difference is the approach.

Family posing is the wrong frame. Family activities is the right one. We're not arranging humans into shapes, we're creating little games and prompts that produce real moments.

The big secret. Stop posing the kids.

Adults can hold a pose for two seconds while the camera fires. Kids cannot. Kids weren't designed to. The harder you push, the more they shut down.

The fix is to give kids something to do, then photograph what happens. Not what we planned. What happens.

Activity bank that almost always works

The walk. Hold hands. Walk slowly toward the camera. The walk gets used to do or undoes about 30% of every family session, and it's the easiest setup in the book.

The huddle. Everybody piles in close. Forehead to forehead. We say "everybody touch foreheads." Kids think it's silly. Parents lean in. Half the time someone laughs. That laugh is the photo.

The chase. Mom runs after the kid. Or dad runs after the kid. The kid screams (in a good way). We're catching motion and real expressions, not posed family-formal.

The tickle. Self-explanatory. Tickle the kid. Photo of the kid laughing, plus the parent's hand reaching in. Works every time as long as your kid is on the ticklish spectrum.

The whisper. One parent whispers something to the kid. Kid reacts. We catch the reaction. Doesn't matter what was whispered.

The lift. One parent picks the kid up. Holds them out. Spins. Standard, but it always works.

The story. One parent sits down with the kid on their lap. Reads to them. Or just tells a story. The kid stops thinking about the camera. The frame is the two faces close together, not staring straight ahead.

The sit. Family sits on the ground. Blanket helps. Everybody slightly turned in. Easier to get a calm frame here than standing.

The one formal frame

Most family sessions need exactly one. The everyone-looking-at-the-camera-with-real-smiles shot. Grandma wants it. The Christmas card needs it. It's fine.

We try to get this one early when the kids still have their A-game energy, then we move on to activities. We don't try to nail it again at the end when everyone is exhausted.

One formal frame. Then back to activities. That's the rhythm.

The candy bribery exception

We're not above it. Snacks and candy are part of the working photographer's family-session kit. But timing matters.

Don't lead with candy. If the kid eats a fistful of Skittles in minute two, you've used your one bribe and now nothing else works.

Save candy for the moment we need ten more minutes after the kid has decided they're done. "Five more frames, then a snack" works. "Smile for the camera" alone does not.

Things that go wrong (and how to handle them)

The meltdown. Walk away. Take a five-minute break. Come back. Don't push through. Trying to "get one good frame" while a toddler is hysterical never works and ends the rest of the session in a bad mood.

The boredom. Kids get bored faster than parents realize. Switch activities every two or three minutes. Walking, then sitting, then lifting, then chasing. Keep them moving.

The "where do I look" question. Tell kids to look at a parent, not the camera. "Look at your mom." That's it. The frame is way better than "look at me and smile."

Our take

The best family photos look like a family being a family for an hour, not a family being photographed for an hour.

Get the one formal shot. Then let the kids be kids. We'll handle the rest.
